Clinical Analysis of the Intussusception in Infants and Children

Abstract
Clinical analysis was performed on 178 cases of the intussuscepton treated at the Department of General surgery of Taegu Catholic university hospital from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1993
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 50 cases were treated by operation.(28.1%)
The intussusception was commonly occurred under 1 year of age(73%), and male to female ratio was 2.5 : 1.
There was no significant difference in seasonal distribution.
On the laboratory findings, 68.7% of all were revealed leukocytosis above 10,000/mm3 in serum.
On the etiology of the intussusception, idiopathic type was 94%, Meckel's diverticulum was 2%, and mesenteric lymphadenitis was 4%.
The preceding illnesses were upper respiratory infection(21.4%), and acute gastroenteritis (5.6%),but no definitive preceding illness was noted in 70.8%.
The symptoms and signs were vomiting(84.3%), abdominal pain and irritability(83.7%), bloody stool(72.5%), and palpable abdominal mass(40.4%) in order of frequency.
The most frequent type was ileocolic type(44%), and the next was ileoileocolic type(30%)
The overall success rate of the barium reduction was 71.9%. It was markedly decreased in the cases arrived at the hospital more than 48hours after onset of the symptoms.
The methods of the operation were manual reduction(92%), bowel resection(6%) and spontaneous reduction(2%).
The postoperative complications were developed in 5 cases(10%) and there was no death among 50 patients who were undergone operation.
The overall recurrence rate was 16 cases(9%), 14 cases(10.9%) were after barium reduction, and 2 cases(4%) were after manual reduction.
The recurrence occurred frequently within 6 months after reduction(68.7%), and first recurrence was the most frequent(62.5%).
